Don't know what this 'Java Developer' download is, but the problem on Snow
Leopard goes away if you install the latest XCode (3.2.4).
Now all versions compile without problem.
You have to be registered as an Apple Developer to be able to download it.

Both 5.10.2, 5.11.8 and the latest Git version compile without problem.
Perhaps the problems with X11 can be resolved by reinstalling XQuartz?
