 only newer versions of clang support thread_local (800 or newer I think),
 but macports-clang-X should support it from about 3.7 onwards (not 100%
 certain of the floor) - certainly macports-clang-5.0+ supports it on macOS
 10.7+ .

 I'll check on that. I have it building now.
