 One data point:

 On 10.5 Leopard Intel, the stock build fails with `/usr/bin/gcc-4.2` with
 the same error regarding redefinition of CARD32, but it succeeds without
 any modifications if built with clang-3.4. That won't help Leopard PPC,
 but it's a useful point to know:
