 Leo, there are known serious problems with the Mac Ports build of
 NCL/ncarg 6.4.0.  Notice that #53031 was never fixed except by upgrading
 to 6.5.0.

 Please update to ncarg 6.5.0 and let us know whether the ESMF problem
 resolves.  Thank you.
