 try. this method, to help narrow down where your problem lies.

 Install xterm.
 {{{
 sudo port install xterm
 }}}
 run the X11.app from the /Applications/MacPorts directory.

 open xterm from that running application using the menu item under "File".

 type into xterm the name of the x11 executable you want to run.
