 well -- yeah, I would think so.

 Eventually, almost everything should build universal -- but on 23 Nov
 2020, I think you will run into lots of potential headaches building
 universal. In three months, the situation will no doubt look better.

 For example, I have not yet enabled {{{meson}}} to build anything
 universal with {{{arm64}}} when using the muniversal portgroup, so until I
 (or someone) does enable that, lots of universal builds might fail.

 We need to figure out what you are trying to install that is starting this
 cascade. What are you after just now?

 I would deactivate everything
 {{{
 sudo port -f deactivate active
 }}}
 and then try to install whatever it is you are after
 {{{
 sudo port -v install MYPORT
 }}}
 and see if +universal gets called in. Hopefully not, but if so, we need to
 figure out what is doing that and stop it from doing that.
