 One more data point about this build problem. On my MacBook, also running
 10.15.7, I was able to build netcdf with the +openmpi option.

 The following ports are currently installed:
   netcdf @4.7.4_2+cdf5+dap+netcdf4+openmpi
   netcdf @4.8.0_0+cdf5+dap+netcdf4+openmpi (active)
 }}}

 Only thing I can see that is different is that this machine has port
 `openmpi` installed and the other Mac that fails has `openmpi-default`
 installed. On the good Mac:

 The following ports are currently installed:
   openmpi @4.1.0_1 (active)
 }}}
