 Has anyone verified that the build isn't mixing use of `make` and gmake`,
 between parent and child build processes?

 While this is rare - and typically only happens in large projects, which
 mix use of Make with other tools - it's not impossible. And barring a
 critical bug in `gmake`, that would explain the failure.
