 OK. Thanks for taking the time to explain all that.

 If I understand the current options, for now, folks can install macports-
 base from master use trace mode on an Intel system, or on an arm system
 install macports-base from master, disable SIP and use:
 {{{
 sudo nvram boot-args=-arm64e_preview_abi
 }}}

 which probably nobody will really do, but there it is.
