 MacPorts tries servers in order of ping time from lowest to highest, which
 is intended to be an approximation of which server is closest to you, or
 at least which server can be reached the quickest, and from which you
 should therefore see the fastest download times.

 If the hostname does not resolve to an IP address, then MacPorts will not
 even try to download from it since of course it can't even be pinged to
 determine its distance.

 Conversely, if MacPorts is trying to download from it, then you have a
 [wiki:MisbehavingServers misbehaving DNS server] which might be returning
 answers for nonexistent hosts. For example, it might return the IP address
 of a server run by your Internet provider, so that it might display a
 search result page for you instead of a server not found message. This
 search page server is likely close to you, in network terms, which could
 explain why it is checked first.
