 OK, so maybe the issue is that OpenSSL fails to load the providers
 completely, and the random instances are just the first thing that would
 be needed from the providers, which aren't there?

 Can you re-try `OPENSSL_CONF=/dev/null openssl list -providers` just to
 make sure that it isn't MacPorts' openssl.cnf file that somehow breaks
 this?
