 I deactivated all ports, and then installed just pkgconfig and gmp on my
 M1:

 % pkg-config --list-all
 gmp   GNU MP - GNU Multiple Precision Arithmetic Library
 gmpxx GNU MP C++ - GNU Multiple Precision Arithmetic Library (C++
 bindings)
 }}}

 no critical error.
