 like "exec_prefix is missing from cairo-script-interpreter.pc" or
 whatever.

 It seems reasonable that pkg-config should probably not do something that
 causes an assertion failure in response to an undefined variable being
 referenced in a .pc file (even though that's clearly also a bug in the .pc
 file).
