 I would suggest that we merge [https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/pull/21875 PR 21875] as soon as the CI passes. The update is done to
 the latest upstream version and only the PY38 subport requires the {{{py-
 cython-compat}}} port. I will add after that the PY312 subport that has to
 use the new {{{meson}}} backend and then we can attempt to convert fully
 to using that for all subports upon the next update which will give some
 more time for testing and resolves the immediate problem now.
