Apple Silicon Hardware and MacPorts

I upgraded from a 2011 27” iMac running El Cap to an M2Pro Mini (16MB, external 2TB SSD) earlier this year. Since I don’t do any work requiring a high-end monitor I use two 27” BenQ 4k monitors, which are working very nicely. Most of the ports I have installed are simple tools used from the command line, with the exception of the GCC package (I work in Fortran) and the GMT graphics package. Both are working well on this new system. As a previous poster noted, I have yet to hear the fans start up on this system, even during the initial install of all the ports I use.

My only complaint at present is the current kerfuffle with the Xcode package on Sonoma that is supposed to be cleared up when Xcode v15.1 is released (in beta 3 as of yesterday). That’s keeping me on Ventura for the time being, and might be an issue on a new purchase since it will come with Sonoma. There is a work-around that folks on this group have discussed, but I’ve sworn off work-arounds unless I absolutely need them.

I am using this solution until I can figure out what Apple Silicon best meets my needs with respect to compiling MacPorts ports (I use Inkscape, R and Octave, amongst other things). I should also say that an entry-level 2017 21.5” iMac (bottom spec) that one of my family members acquired is without doubt the worst computer that I’ve ever used, and that includes 8088/6 DOS machines. Nice screen, but a horror to do try and do anything on.

Do many people on this list use AS machines, and what are their experiences and advice regarding MacPorts on them? Am I in fact over-thinking it?
