libungif has been discontinued in favor of giflib, as the patent on LZW compression has expired. The libungif and the libgif ports conflict. Clients of libungif *should* be compatible with libgif, but that's not gauranteed, so a mass sweep is unadvisable.
I have verified that fontforge builds with giflib, and correctly supports GIFs.
