This fails to upgrade if +gcc48 is installed due to variant conflict:

Error: ifeffit: Variant gcc48 conflicts with gcc49
Error: Unable to open port: Error evaluating variants

Need to check if gcc48 is set before setting default_variants +gcc49 (or 
remove the +gcc48 variant altogether).

Typo, I think.
