There was this thread I finally found:

though it seems nothing came of it. The xorg port still uses exit,
just like you do (exit in pre-fetch), so I'm not sure if it would
experience the same issues.
The time I ran into this was from bug 1449,
<http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/ticket/1449>
and I simply removed the exit, though it was in 'variant darwin'
instead of pre-fetch.
