I was expecting any old version, just that my libtool didn't work with 
the default selection of "/usr/bin/gcc-4.0" since it couldn't figure 
out the call mode or something.

Changing CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.0 to CC=gcc worked. Maybe it was just a 
temporary quirk ?
