Except that "gcc -v" on my machine says "--target=i686-apple-darwin8"  
but we want the arch recorded as "i386" not "i686" (right?).

Then there's "uname -p" which says "i386" on Intel, but on PowerPC it  
says "powerpc" (instead of "ppc" like we want).
