reinplace question

If I want to append a space and ampersand at the end of a known line,  
what's the way to write this in reinplace?

I tried (without success):
     reinplace s|psppire|psppire &|g
     reinplace s|psppire|psppire\ &|g
     reinplace s|psppire|psppire\ \&|g

Any suggestions?
