So you compile with gcc42 by default, and have variants for gcc43 and  
gcc44.

You should add a variant for gcc42 also, make them all conflict with  
one another, and ensure at least one variant is selected. See the  
molden port for an example of how this can be done. For now, gcc42  
should continue to be the default, since that's what you were using by  
default before. But the next time the port is updated to a new  
version, you should make the default gcc43 or gcc44, whatever is  
decided in #20103.
