I don't know a heck of a lot about compiling but is it possible that a  
build would succeed but not function properly relating to this subject?

If so we don't know how many bugs there are in macports.

I have been having problems with either postfix or openssl and these  
types of questions leave me very uneasy with production use of MacPorts.
Unless the answer to my question is false :)
