direct mode uninstall broken under 1.9

As an aside, it would be pretty cool if there were a way to convert from 'direct' mode to 'image' mode in some automated way.

Originally, direct mode was a good idea because there were problems with the first implementation of image mode (symlinks, and then performance problems on old versions of Mac OS X with lots of hardlinks).

If there were an easy way of moving an install from direct to image mode, we could probably deprecate direct mode and simplify things somewhat.
