How to specify a variant to depends_lib in a portfile?

> 	We are building a virtual port, which install some 40 (!) ports via depends_lib "port:" entries.  Now we find that we must install one particular variant of one of the ports.  Is there a way to specify that in a depends-lib entry?  Or is there some other way to accomplish the same effect?

See if there's a file that is installed only when that variant is picked and let the virtual port complain (or the port that builds on top of it) that that file is missing, ergo the variant is missing.

depot_tools does that for git-core +svn and I okular needs poppler +qt4 +quartz
