That would be strange because that would exactly produce this problem.
But I see that is not a real argument.

Might be outdated, but
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/UserMgmt_v10.6.pdf
states that uids below 100 are reserved, not 500.

With google I failed to find that uids < 500 should be reserved,
except, funny enough, in a macports trac entry.
