This thread does make it seem, however, that rather than just declaring a reserved range for Apple, we need to put some more thought into what a "sensible default policy" for allocating uids/gids across an even greater range might look like. I'll look to see if there's already a radar pending against this and, if not, file one.
In the meantime, another option for macports would be to simply request a reserved uid (by filing a bug report at the usual place) and see if you can get one assigned that's going to be reserved even retroactively (so even if you have to add the account yourself, you at least know you're not going to collide). Contact me offline with the radar # and I'll play shepherd, if you choose to go that route.
