Problems trying to pull sources from git

I think all symptoms observed in this thread need to lead to the conclusion that MacPorts certainly is able to pull the sources from git repos, but that the check-out clone is in a corrupted state. Well, as long as the port doesn't want to call git on the downloaded source tree all is fine.

But I guess it would be good to figure out why this corruption actually happens.
