The defaults listed in "man portfile" for configure.universal_cflags, configure.universal_cxxflags, configure.universal_ldflags are out of date. (They're correct for 10.4 PowerPC, I believe, but on any other OS or architecture, the sysroot won't be used, and on Snow Leopard and up of course the set of archs is different.)
