And it's not like you can take those existing packages and just upgrade them with MacPorts either, you have to overwrite all of it with a brand new copy.

So neat trick in MacPorts: if you don't run clean, the created pkgs hang around in the build dir. When you go to create a new [m]pkg, only changed pkgs will get recreated.
