Certainly setting a date can help people make definite plans to commit
some time to the project, even though there's no pressure to
participate. Usually these kinds of events involve a physical meeting
though, to make the developers highly available to each other, and to
minimise distractions.
I haven't heard about projects doing something similar over IRC. Is
anyone familiar with one, and if so, how successful was it?
