Hi Jeremy,
I observe this problem too, and I think it is partly related to the new portgroup mpi and/or compilers.
I was not looking into the details yet, but as far as I understand netcdf-fortran has some +gcc4x variant and depends on netcdf and recursively on hdf5-18 and the variant is propagated.
The hdf5-18 is already installed with a set of variants and the MPI portgroup does not handle correctly. But this is just a first guess.
