Hmmm, that variable hasn't been used by Qt for a long time, at least not officially. Are we sure it's required?

That's strange. I know you have to use `portindex -f` if you remove or rename ports in a source tree, but your observation seems to indicate that "base" keeps a copy or caches information somewhere that has to be updated when you remove a source tree. I just checked with 2.3.3; after out-commenting a line like you did above, ports were served from the default tree again. (I could only test it under Linux right now, but I don't think it likely that it works differently there.)

Sounds like you found a bug...
