The MacPorts project is pleased to announce that our primary rsync server at
rsync.macports.org is now hosted by the Friedrich-Alexander University in
Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. You may already have noticed a multilingual
message welcoming you to ftp.fau.de in your MacPorts logs or verbose output;
this is normal.
In addition, while distfiles.macports.org and packages.macports.org continue
to use MaxCDN to deliver files to users from the nearest possible location,
MaxCDN will now get those files from the FAU web server.
These changes are transparent to users and require no changes on your part.
But if you are not located in or near Germany, you may want to edit your
macports.conf and sources.conf files to use a closer mirror to get faster
transfer speeds when you "sudo port selfupdate" or "sudo port sync". The
list of available mirrors can be found at:
https://trac.macports.org/wiki/Mirrors
FAU has supported MacPorts for many years already by providing a MacPorts
mirror server, and we are grateful to have them now providing our primary
file server.
