os.major etc. on Linux

Right, that does ring a bell indeed, and I think that's indeed why I ended up keeping os_arch to x86_64 on 64-bit Linux.

I haven't had an answer to my question on how to tackle the os_major bug. Should I ask again via a formal bug report on trac?
