Hello Mentors and Org Admins,

We are pleased to announce Google Summer of Code 2018 <http://g.co/gsoc>,
the 14th consecutive year of the program.

We have announced
<https://opensource.googleblog.com/2017/09/announcing-google-summer-of-code-2018.html>
the main dates (org apps open, etc.) on the program timeline
<https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline>. Additional dates
will be added into the timeline later in 2017 after some conversations at
the Mentor Summit with mentors and incorporating their feedback.

Organizations -- If you would like to apply for the 2018 program please
start thinking about the projects you would like students to work on and
also reach out to your community members to ask if they would like to be
mentors for the program. Having a thorough and well thought out list of
Project Ideas is the most important part of your application.

Please note that Org applications will open on January 4th. This is earlier
than in previous years as it allows for a longer time between the orgs
announced date (February 12th) and the opening of student applications
(March 12th). This was a request we received from a significant number of
students and mentors this year. We hope the additional time will allow
students to better communicate with the orgs they are interested in and
will help orgs find the best student matches for their organizations for
the summer.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of GSoC!

Last week we also announced the Google Code-in 2017 <http://g.co/gci> (GCI)
contest for 13-17 year old students. GCI is open for past GSoC mentoring
organizations to apply to be a part of this exciting contest from October
9th - October 24th. We are also giving GCI orgs over a month to enter their
tasks into the webapp, hopefully this will help them prepare for the busy
winter contest. GCI opens for student participants on November 28th! You
can read more about the program on our blog
<https://opensource.googleblog.com/2017/09/announcing-google-code-in-2017.html>
.

For any questions about the programs please email us at

Best,

Google OSPO team
