thread_local with clang-5.0 on 10.6 (and lower) -- works , but slight issue with libc++ that I would appreciate some help with.

I've seen errors on the 10.6 buildbot worker about needing thread local storage, and haven't known what to do about it. I don't have any advice for you but thanks for looking into the problem!
