"back in the day" & IIRC: Octave required modern GNU grep to handle locale correctly; the built-in grep wasn't guaranteed to do so. That was probably with some 3.X series. With the 4.X series maybe it's no longer necessary; IDK. Worth testing, IMHO. - MLD
