It gets through, but shows your gmail address as the from address. I don't think gmail supports customizing the from address anymore either.

With more ISPs introducing such restrictions, as well as problems we've seen sending mail to some servers, we've been wondering if we need to offer an smtp server or even an imap server, but I don't think we're very enthusiastic about either of those.
