The only reason MacPorts would try to download the patch file is if it cannot find it in the files directory so verify that the patch file name is the same as what you put in the patchfiles variable, including the filename extension. You may want to turn on showing filename extensions in the Finder to help with this.

I was confused about how much of the path needed to be in the Portfile.  I had “files/bugfix.diff” instead of just “bugfix.diff”.
