 I installed MacPorts on my iMac with leopard. I downloaded the package
 MacPorts-1.6.0.pkg and installed. The installation created the directories
 under /opt/local, but no .profile was create in my homedir. Therefore the
 port command did not work in a shell. I had to create a .profile myself.
 After that MacPorts worked fine.

 The manual creation of a .profile file should not be necessary.
