 Thanks, the issue has been resolved. Below I describe some curiosities
 about it,
 for anybody interested:

 Interestingly enough, after ``sudo port clean --dist zlib`` things got a
 bit worse:

 Neither selfupdate, nor sync made a difference. However, after trying to
 install with ``+universal``, then cleaning without the ``--dist`` option,
 the installation worked.
