 FWIW, I thought apache was built against the leopard-bundled openssl
 library (which would be missing symbols) and it's not:

 sarcasmic:/opt/local/apache2/modules$ otool -L mod_ssl.so
 mod_ssl.so:
         /opt/local/lib/libssl.0.9.8.dylib (compatibility version 0.9.8,
 current version 0.9.8)
         /opt/local/lib/libcrypto.0.9.8.dylib (compatibility version 0.9.8,
