Comment (by ryandesign at macports.org):
`sudo port upgrade installed` won't rebuild all ports. It will only
upgrade those that are outdated. It would probably be best to rebuild all
ports, even those that are not outdated. So that you don't run into
trouble trying to keep track of which ports you've built with gcc 3 and
which with gcc 4, it might be most straightforward to move your existing
MacPorts aside (rename /opt/local to /opt/local-old, rename
/Applications/MacPorts to /Applications/MacPorts-old, rename
/Library/Tcl/macports1.0 to /Library/Tcl/macports1.0-old), make sure gcc 4
is selected, then install MacPorts (either 1.6.0 from disk image, or
[wiki:howto/RunningTrunk trunk] if you'd like to test the not-quite-
finished 1.7.0) and install your ports again. Be sure to save any
configuration files or databases or other data that might be in your old
MacPorts directory.
My comment about PATH, CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS was simply meant to indicate
that everything should "just work" because MacPorts takes care of things
for you. You don't need to set anything, and anything you set won't
influence MacPorts. The exception in 1.6.0 as I said is the compiler you
select with gcc_select, but even that won't affect MacPorts as soon as
1.7.0 is released.
