 I had the same problem.  I then downloaded 5.9.6pre12 and built it by
 hand.  It worked after I commented out the following two errors:
 In file included from libopts.c:12:
 value-type.c:100: warning: '__gnu_inline__' attribute directive ignored
 In file included from libopts.c:13:
 xat-attribute.c:91: warning: '__gnu_inline__' attribute directive ignored
