 Thanks for the instructions. I had also to do a

  > sudo port uninstall kdebase4

 before I could install the newly compiled version though.

 Unfortunately, it hasn't helped with the X11 problem. I have the same
 symptoms as before, starting ny KDE4 applications causes X11 to start, and
 the applications do not start properly.

 Should I recompile anything else ? kdelibs4 ? Do I need kdebase4-runtime ?
