 I ran into this problem with +universal also. r44363 fixed it for me
 though. The problem was configure being called with
 MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.5. configure tried to link with -lcrt1.10.5.o,
 causing a bunch of tests to fail.
