 Since writing I have made a second attempt at getting gv installed using
 the (now unsupported) 'iInstaller.app'. This also failed with a strange
 error but iI seems nevertheless to have succeeded in successfully
 installing a properly functional 'ghostview'.

 The difficulty encountered using MacPorts remains unresolved. However it
 might be difficult to do any further experiments without uninstalling the
 'iInstaller' installation and I am not sure how easy that might be. It
 seems 'iInstaller' is partially broken and it is not possible to pursue
 that matter since support has been discontinued.

 Apologies for a muddled situation.
