Comment:

 As ${prefix}/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf states, the home texmf tree is
 located in ~/texmf/ (as is the standard in other unices).

 There is no ls-R file in my ~/texmf dir, however,

 $ kpsewhich smfalpha.bst
 /Users/milosh/texmf/bibtex/bst/smf/smfalpha.bst
 (where I put it)
