 Additional cleanups before re-requesting commit:

 *  now works with 'emacs+carbon' by finding the correct Emacs binary

 *  if an Emacs binary is not found (should always but to be safe), don't
 bytecompile the *.el files

 * disambiguate global variables by prepending 'slime_' to all of them

 * cleaned up .emacs initialization code examples

 * now passes port lint target
